A Massachusetts-based company, with a presence in east central Indiana, has named a new chief executive officer. AquaBounty Technologies Inc. says Sylvia Wulf, who currently serves as senior vice president of US Foods Inc., will begin her new role in January.

Wulf will succeed Ronald Stotish, who will remain with the company as an executive director with responsibility for research and regulatory affairs. AquaBounty says Wulf’s appointment coincides with the company’s development emphasis on the commercialization of its AquAdvantage Salmon, which is slated to be produced in Albany, Indiana.

AquaBounty acquired the former Bell Fish Co. facility in Albany in June 2017. The company in April received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to raise salmon at the facility, however it is awaiting approval from the FDA to import its AquAdvantage brand salmon eggs from Canada. In the meantime, the company has stocked the tanks with traditional Atlantic Salmon eggs and is growing those fish at the facility.

Wulf says the AquAdvantage Salmon, which is bioengineered to to grow to market size in about half the time of traditional farm-raising method, is "the type of innovation necessary to meet the rising consumer demand for a healthy source of protein, and salmon in particular, without placing further pressure on the sea and coastal environments."
