The utility says the investment is in addition to more than $7.5 million in similar improvements in its systems last year.
The largest project will be a $1.8 million improvement at the South Haven Wastewater Treatment plant. That will include upgrades to the intake where raw water enters the plant as well as a new pumping station. The utility will spend more than a million additional dollars in 2018 to complete that work.
The funding will also support ongoing work on minor sewer rehabilitation and other efforts Aqua says are critical to daily operations.
The utility says the types of investment the company is making are in line with those cited by the Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA previously estimated more than $384 billion in public water system repairs and replacements are needed over 20 years to protect public health. Aqua says its ongoing improvements will help it ensure safety and meet regulatory compliance standards.
