The university says the goal is to assist in the creation of programs that diversify the nursing workforce.
The ICN will receive $2.2 million from the Health Resources and Services Administration over the next four years and distribute the funds as sub-awards to the eight schools of nursing throughout the state.
Through the grant, AU says it will work to increase diversity and inclusion in the Indiana nursing workforce, expand implementation of the current mentoring programs of the schools, and address social determinants of health and education.
“As the U.S. population grows increasingly diverse, so must the nursing workforce,” said Lynn Schmidt, dean of the School of Nursing and Kinesiology at AU. “Increasing diversity in the nursing workforce can serve as a vital strategy to address health inequities. Nurses are called on to respond with sensitivity to everyone, regardless of race, disability, socioeconomic status, religion, or sexual orientation.”
The other institutions to receive funding from the ICN include Goshen College, Indiana University East, IUPUC, Indiana Wesleyan University, Purdue University, the University of Saint Francis-Crown Point, and the University of Southern Indiana.
