Known as “Super Fly,” the treats are made from Black Soldier Fly larvae. The company says, in addition to being good for pets, the treats are good for the environment.
Scout & Zoe’s founder Cindy Dunston Quirk talked about the new product line and “exponential growth” in an interview on Inside INdiana Business with Gerry Dick.
“They’re grown in the United States. They feed on waste from restaurants, so they’re actually cleaning up the Earth while feeding our animals,” said Quirk. “They have less gaseous emissions. They use less water. They have a very, very small carbon footprint and it takes a fraction of the land to produce millions of Black Soldier Fly larvae than it would, say, cattle or pigs or chickens or turkeys.”
Scout & Zoe’s launched in 2010 and specializes in unique treats for not only dogs, but cats, horses, reptiles, amphibians, and other small animals. The company sells its products wholesale throughout the country and exports outside of the U.S. as well.
Another unique ingredient used for the company’s treats is Asian Carp, an invasive species of fish that have caused problems for native fish species in lakes and rivers.
“We’re trying to save the Great Lakes one treat at a time so that they don’t take over the waterways,” said Quirk.
