The Elkhart Truth reports the city’s plan commission passed the advisory plan, which comes without the 8,000-seat amphitheater that was originally included.
The updated plans was presented last month after the Elkhart AMP Group withdrew its support for the venue. Mayor Rod Roberson’s office, however, still has interest in developing an outdoor music space at the site, according to the publication.
“What I’ll say is, we’re not in negotiations with the developer that we were negotiating with before. We’re still evaluating options for that space and for other opportunities to do that type of use there,” Mike Huber, director of development services, told the plan commission. “As the mayor said, we are committed to an open-air opportunity in that space.”
Huber noted that the overall aspects of the plan remain intact without the amphitheater project. The current draft of the plan is largely centered around street design with a two-way street network, more street trees, and four parking structures, the Truth reported.
Plans also call for a public square on the south side of downtown Elkhart.
The Elkhart City Council will make its own vote of the plan, which Assistant Director of Planning and Zoning Eric Trotter said will be followed by public hearings and feedback sessions this summer before a final adoption in the fall.
