The Indianapolis Motor Speedway says it expects a similar-sized crowd to last year’s inaugural Red Bull Air Race at this year’s event. Last year, the race topped expectations by attracting more than 62,000 fans. This year’s race, set for October 14-15, will crown the series’ world champion. IMS President Doug Boles tells Inside INdiana Business now is an important time to get people "paying attention to events outside of the 500."

Before last year’s inaugural event, Visit Indy had estimated between 40,000 and 50,000 fans would attend, calling the event a regional draw. Just days after the 2016 event, the Speedway announced the race would return this year. Boles says it’s important to continue to introduce people to air racing, and it’s an added bonus to have the season finale in a community "known for championships."

The race takes place on an "aerial racetrack" above the Speedway, with competitors reaching speeds in excess of 230 miles per hour. ?The series spans the globe. Races this year have taken place in Abu Dhabi, Japan, Hungary and Russia. German pilot Matthias Dolderer won the 2016 race.
