Hill Warns Hoosiers of Equifax Settlement Scams

Subscribe NowIndiana Attorney General Curtis Hill is warning Hoosiers to watch out for scam artists who are trying to take advantage of the recently announced Equifax settlement. In September 2017, Equifax announced a data breach that exposed the personal information of 147 million people. Last week, the Federal Trade Commission announced Equifax had agreed to a settlement, upwards of $700 million, to help people hit by the breach.
The state attorney general’s office says before filing a claim online, make sure it’s a legitimate site. Scammers have been setting up fraudulent websites that imitate the appearance of an authentic site.
The authentic website is www.equifaxbreachsettlement.com. But Attorney General Hill says some of the imposter websites have misspellings – like “breech” instead of breach. Another URL has an incorrect spelling of the word settlement.
“Verify that you have received the proper website address from a trusted source such as the FTC. If you are typing the URL manually, be careful to enter the website address correctly,” urged Hill.
Online scammers are often engaged in “phishing” – a way to get people to reveal personal data like credit card numbers.
