The rule weighs performance and growth equally, with additional factors for high school including graduation rate and performance on AP tests. A schools can only receive an "A" grade if it meets performance and growth goals for all student subgroups, including English Language Learners, free/reduced lunch and special needs.
The Indiana State Board of Education approved the formula in May by a vote of 8-1. Andrea Neal, who is no longer on the board, cast the only "no" vote.
The first results from the new school grading formula should be released late next year.
