Indianapolis-based Sport Graphics has begun work on a more than eight story-tall logo on the JW Marriott downtown celebrating Indy as "The Greatest CITY in Racing."
The 18,500 square-foot vinyl decal weighs more than 1,000 pounds and will be 325 feet off the ground at its highest point. Indianapolis Motor Speedway President Doug Boles, Sports Graphics Chief Executive Officer Frank Hancock, JW Marriott Indianapolis General Manager Phil Ray and Hulman Motorsports Senior Vice President Allison Melangton helped install the first panels of the graphic. The display will take about four days to install.
Melangton says this year’s design plays off the idea that Indianapolis "is known around the world as among the very best hosts for major sporting events."
Sport Graphics and the JW Marriott have worked together on several large-scale graphics in the past. Previous displays celebrated last year’s 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500, the 2012 Super Bowl and the 2015 NCAA Men’s Final Four.
The 101st Running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil will take place Sunday, May 28.
