“Mastering foundational literacy skills by the end of third grade is vital to achieving our goal that 95% of Hoosier students are reading proficiently by 2027,” Gov. Eric Holcomb said at the celebration. “Across our state, educators, families and communities are linking arms to help more students read, and it is important that we celebrate this impactful work.”
House and Senate leadership also highlighted their attempts to pass Senate Bill 1 this session, which is legislation seeking to remedy poor literacy rates by holding back third graders who don’t pass IREAD. A coalition of education organizations and teachers have pushed back against the retention portion of the bill.
The bill passed the Senate 36-13 and in its first House committee 9-4 along party lines this week.
