Subscribe NowThe head of strategy and business development for Motor says the purpose of its monthly electric vehicle subscription service is to accelerate the adoption of electric cars. The company, a subsidiary of Virginia-based AES Corp. (NYSE: AES), launched Motor Drive in Indianapolis in August. “(We are) giving people the opportunity to get in electric cars, experience them, and ultimately, change the lifestyle away from gasoline vehicles into electric,” said Mike Barg.
Barg talked about the first-of-its-kind service in an interview on Inside INdiana Business with Gerry Dick.
Unlike the now-defunct electric car sharing service BlueIndy, Motor Drive allows users to pick a car to be delivered to their home, which they can drive as long as they want while under the subscription, with the option of buying the car if they wish.
The company offers three subscription tiers, which include insurance, routine maintenance, and access to several charging options. Users will have the ability to choose from a variety of EV models, such as the Nissan Leaf, Chevrolet Bolt, Tesla Model 3, Audi e-tron, and Tesla Model X.
AES is also the parent of Indianapolis Power & Light Co. Barg says the engagement in Indianapolis has been exciting, with the company recently catching up on its wait list for cars.
Barg says there is room for growth beyond Indianapolis.
“Our goal is to give everyone access to an electric car and 70% of Americans haven’t experienced an electric car to date, so we have a lot ahead of us,” said Barg. “We don’t have any plans for the next city yet, but our goal is to get everyone this experience in the country.”
