Simon Starts to Reopen Malls

Subscribe NowSix weeks after shutting down its shopping malls and outlet centers across the country due to the pandemic, Indianapolis-based Simon Property Group (NYSE: SPG) has reopened five of its Indiana locations, but with limited customers.
Simon opened the doors Monday at Greenwood Park Mall, Hamilton Town Center, Indiana Premium Outlets in Edinburgh, Tippecanoe Mall in Lafayette, and University Park Mall in Mishawaka.
Governor Eric Holcomb announced last week that retail stores and malls in Phase 2 of his Back on Track Indiana Plan could reopen this week but with 50% of normal customer capacity.
Shopping centers in Marion, Lake and Cass counties are still under the extended stay-at-home order.
“The health, safety and well-being of those we serve will always be our highest priority, and we have developed a thorough and detailed set of protocols highlighting the exceptional measures we’ve implemented to safeguard shoppers, retailers and employees as we reopen,” said John Rulli, president of Simon.
The company has instituted a variety of health and safety procedures for tenants and customers. It says it has enhanced cleaning and disinfecting high-traffic locations, such as restrooms, escalators and dining areas.
It is also making protective masks available, sanitizing wipes and temperature testing at entrances or property offices.
Simon Property Group says the reopening provides an economic boost to the local communities impacted by COVID-19. SPG says it provides 9,600 jobs and contributes $70 million of sales tax and $6 million in property tax revenue to the State of Indiana.
“Our properties are an integral part of our communities, not only in terms of shopping, dining and entertainment, but also job creation, small business growth and community support,” said Rulli.
