INDOT says the decision will help provide food and beverage options for commercial truck drivers and motorists engaged in essential travel during the COVID-19 crisis.
The program aims to provide additional options for truck drivers, many of whom are reporting limited availability of food and beverages near highways across the country.
The move by INDOT is in accordance with a notice from the Federal Highway Administration, titled “Operation of Commercial Food Trucks in Federally Funded Interstate Highway Rest Areas,” which was issued April 3.
INDOT says it will issue two permits for food trucks to operate between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. each day. Permits will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis at certain rest area locations.
Permits will be valid until canceled by INDOT or the national federal emergency status is lifted.
