Fewer air travelers during the pandemic are allowing Fort Wayne International Airport to work on a large renovation project without disrupting passengers.

FWA says it will launch Monday a nearly half-million-dollar rehabilitation project on its parking lot. The airport plans to mill and replace existing asphalt.

During construction, customers will get 30 minutes of free parking in open parking lots.

“We are currently living in interesting and challenging times.  While we wish it would be business as normal, the fact is the suggested travel restrictions will actually help us complete this project in a more expeditious fashion,” said Scott Hinderman, executive director of airports.

FWA says the project is part of the larger Project Gateway initiative, which includes expansion of the passenger terminal, the construction of additional parking spots in long-term parking and improvements to the terminal apron where planes park for loading.
