A once-popular street fair in the northern Chicago suburb of Evanston is moving to Whiting. The move, according to our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana, stems from a dispute between festival organizers and the city of Evanston.

Custer Fair, which includes artists selling their wares, a variety of food booths and entertainment has been held in the Illinois community for nearly a half century, but this year it’s moving to Whiting.

The fair usually attracts 85,000 people, according to the organizers.

The public says the City of Evanston said it had accommodated the fair, providing traffic management, food inspection and public safety staff.

But officials from the fair say the event took a big hit financially due to some demands by the city. Evanston says it hasn’t been reimbursed for the services it provided.

Whiting is known for its annual Pierogi Fest in July. It will add the Custer Fair during Father’s Day weekend in June, according to the paper.
