Former Carrier Site to Become Bus Driver Training Facility

The commuter bus line says it intends to build 3,500 square feet of classroom space for new employees and training purposes. Most of the property will become a driving course for behind-the-wheel training.
“IndyGo is looking forward to the opportunities for professional development that this expanded training location will bring our employees. We anticipate being able to use this new facility to enhance employment opportunities through internships, partnerships, and a youth apprentice program,” said an IndyGo spokesperson.
IndyGo says it paid approximately $392,000 for the property. Construction costs are not yet available, as the project is currently out for procurement.
The former industrial site on the city’s near west side was developed in the early 1900s. Carrier-Bryant used it for about 30 years to manufacturing heating and air conditioning systems. It ceased operations in the early 1980s.
The city took possession of the vacant land in 2012. The city sought help from the Environmental Protection Agency to remove drums of hazardous materials and underground storage tanks. In 2013 the city applied for and received a $500,000 federal grant to demolish structures, and conduct incidental environmental remediation activities
IndyGo hopes to open the new facility in the spring of 2021.
According to the EPA, the Carrier site measures about 19 acres overall. The DMD says it will issue a Request for Information to facilitate the redevelopment of the remaining portion of the property.
