The mayor detailed plans for a new destination park on the city’s southeast side that will cater to local and traveling sports teams and their families.
The 40-acre park, located near the I-65 interchange at Worthsville Road, will include an outdoor sports complex, a multi-use playing field, splash pad and inclusive playground equipment.
The project is still in the conceptual phase, so a timeline for completion was not available.
Myers also gave a first look at interior designs for the city’s new downtown fieldhouse, which will serve as the anchor for the redevelopment of the former Greenwood Middle School. The fieldhouse will be the result of an effort to preserve the school’s north gymnasium.
The city says the fieldhouse will be a year-round recreational and fitness center for residents, but will also serve as a destination for youth sports teams. The facility will be equipped to host several sports, including volleyball, basketball, baseball and soccer, among others.
The fieldhouse will also include an elevated, three-lane track, as well as the city’s first indoor turf field. The city says it expects to issue a public bid for construction soon.
The city acquired the Greenwood Middle School property in 2017. Demolition of the majority of the school began last March and the city unveiled the exterior design for the fieldhouse the following August.
