An Elkhart County fencing manufacturer has announced plans to end operations, with the first round of layoffs beginning in March.

Georgia-based Merchants Metals LLC filed this week a WARN Notice with the state that it is closing its operations in New Paris.

The company says 68 people will lose their jobs with the closure.

The New Paris site, which has been operating since 1981, is one four U.S. manufacturing plants owned by the company.

The company says the layoffs being March 20 with additional layoffs in April and May. The plant is expected to close permanently in August.
