Notre Dame says the institute will focus on emerging trends in data science and business analytics. But the center will also explore the societal impact of data and the importance to use the information ethically.
The money comes from Robert and Sara Lumpkins, who said the name “Lucy” was meaningful to their family.
“We believe data science and analytics offer a powerful opportunity to enhance interdisciplinary collaboration and learning at the University,” said Lumpkin. “And that Notre Dame is uniquely positioned to bring an ethical perspective to its use for the good of society.”
Following his graduation from Notre Dame, Lumpkins earned an MBA from Stanford University. He then began a 38-year career with Cargill Inc., a Minnesota-based food an agribusiness company.
