The honor is awarded to schools where a large percentage of students are on free or reduced lunch programs, and teachers and staff overcome challenges.
Title 1 schools typically serves migrant students, students with limited English proficiency, delinquent students or any student in need.
This year’s awardees:
- William Henry Burkhart Elementary School in Perry Township Schools received the award for Exceptional Student Performance.
- Arlington Heights Elementary School in Monroe County Community School Corporation received the award for Closing the Achievement Gap.
IDOE says it selected the schools after a rigorous data review and interview process to identify successful, high-poverty schools with varied student populations and locations.
“These schools represent the vision of working together on the behalf of students by creating environments whereby all children have the opportunity to succeed,” said Dr. Jennifer McCormick, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction.
According to the U.S. Department of Education, Title 1 is the largest federally funded educational program. The program provides supplemental funds to school districts to assist schools with the highest student concentrations of poverty to meet school educational goals
