Hoosier Poultry Sector Donates 100 Tons of Protein

INDIANAPOLIS – The Hoosier poultry industry on Monday presented a donation of 200,000 pounds of poultry products to help provide protein to Indiana families in need during the holiday season.

This was the industry’s 72^nd annual poultry donation. Lieutenant Governor Suzanne Crouch accepted the products, which will be shared with food banks throughout the state.

“The products donated, not only today, but throughout the year, will go a long way in ensuring our Hoosiers in need have fresh and nutritious food to consume,” said Crouch, who also serves as Indiana Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Indiana’s poultry industry is a big economic driver for the state. According to USDA data, Indiana is the nation’s No. 1 producer of duck, No. 2 in chicken and egg production, and No. 4 in turkey production.

“Our ag economy in Indiana would not be where it is today without the hard work and dedication of our poultry producers,” said Bruce Kettler, ISDA Director. “They continue to increase economic value and expand the Hoosier supply chain, not only nationally, but globally as well.”

In addition to the 100 tons of poultry products presented Monday, the state’s poultry farmers make donations throughout the year.

The Indiana State Poultry Association says over the past 12 months, ISPA members have contributed more than 900,000 eggs and 150,000 to their local communities.
