Indiana’s home builders appear to be busier than they were last year at this time.  Based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the Indiana Builders Association says 1,447 single-family building permits were issued statewide in September.

IBA says that’s 13 percent higher than the number of permits pulled during the same period last year.

However, the organization says for the first nine months of 2019, permits for single-family dwellings in the Hoosier state are down three percent compared to a year ago.

“There are still positive conditions for single-family homebuilders in Indiana,” said Indiana Builders Association President Don Thieneman. “Interest in Hoosier homebuilding is still healthy; however, we are still seeing challenges with meeting those needs with a construction workforce shortage.”

Thieneman also says “lofty” regulations are imposing challenges to bring products to the marketplace.

On a national scale, September marked the first monthly increase nationally for the number of single-family homes currently under construction since January, according to data from the National Association of Homebuilders.
