A building in downtown Indianapolis believed to be the third-oldest surviving building constructed by the White Castle restaurant chain will be getting new life. Indiana Landmarks says it has sold the 1927 building with plans for it to be restored and maintained in the future.

White Castle #3 sold its last hamburger in 1979 and, up to that point, it was the oldest continuously operating White Castle. Since that time, it has served as a real estate office and a National Guard recruiting center.

When the Indiana National Guard no longer had need for the building, the state transferred ownership to the Indianapolis Department of Public Works. The DPW then sold it to Indiana Landmarks for one dollar with an agreement that the organization would sell the building with a preservation covenant.

Indiana Landmarks says it has sold the property to Jason Hartman. As part of the sale, Indiana Landmarks will maintain the protective covenant on the structure, guaranteeing that its historic appearance will be restored and maintained.
