Gelnex, which makes gelatin and collagen peptides used in products ranging from pharmaceuticals to candy, plans to hire 12 employees next year.
The proposed Portage plant would dry the gelatin to a powder form. Companies use the powder for products including makeup, protein powders, candy and pharmaceutical products.
During last week’s meeting, Portage Economic Development Director Andy Maletta said the plant would be Gelnex’s first manufacturing facility in the United States and could grow in the coming years. The personal and real property tax abatement approvals total about $3.5 million.
