Bartholomew County Highway Garage Gains Funding

The Bartholomew County Council has approved funding for a new county highway garage. The Republic reports the council has authorized up to $6 million in bonds to help build and equip the facility, though an exact cost of the project is not yet known.

The garage will be built on a farm site near the Clay Township Fire Department, replacing the existing 66-year-old facility, according to the publication. The facility is now in the design phase and councilors hope to have a cost for the project by early February.

The council had previously considered an $8 million bond issuance but said that number could go down. The Republic reports other funding sources could also be considered, including the county’s reserve or Rainy Day funds, which could lower the bond further.

Earlier this year, the Bartholomew County Commissioners expressed hope of breaking ground on the project as early as next March, which could allow the highway department to move into the building by the end of 2019.
