The president will Saturday speak to attendees of the National FFA Convention & Expo at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, as part the FFA’s open invitation to all sitting presidents.
The National FFA Organization released the following statement to our partners at WTHR:
It is a long-held tradition of the National FFA Organization to invite the sitting President, no matter political affiliation, to bring remarks at the National FFA Convention & Expo. Former President Harry S. Truman spoke in 1957. Presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter spoke in 1974 and 1978 respectively. Then Vice President George H.W. Bush spoke in 1987 followed by a pre-recorded message from President Ronald Reagan in 1988. President George H.W. Bush spoke in 1991. First Lady Michelle Obama also brought pre-recorded greetings in 2015, and Vice President Mike Pence did the same at last year’s convention. This year is no different. We invited the President, as is our custom, and President Trump has accepted our invitation.
We look forward to welcoming the President to our convention as we celebrate student success and raise the profile of agricultural education and FFA. Also appearing at this year’s Convention are Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos on Friday and Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue alongside the President on Saturday.
A specific time for the president’s speech has not been announced. However, the official schedule for the convention only has one event listed for Bankers Life Fieldhouse on Saturday, which is set for 1:30 p.m.
The president’s address will not be open to the public. Only those attending the convention’s ninth general session with the proper credentials will be allowed.
