Subscribe NowThe Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has awarded the state $9 million to take on mental and emotional health issues in schools. The Project Advancing Wellness and Resilience Education grant will help boost and develop school-based mental health teams. Three districts in the state were selected as partners to help create sustainable models that can be adapted for schools statewide.
Each district will work with the IDOE, the Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addictions and local community health centers to achieve the mission of Project AWARE and create best practices. Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Jennifer McCormick says "social and emotional health supports are key to better understanding and meeting our students’ needs. Through Project AWARE, Indiana will create lasting partnerships in these important areas. We will also develop effective practices which will enhance our schools’ mental health efforts."
The funding will cover five years. The districts and their respective community health centers are: Avon Community School Corp. and Cummins Behavioral Health Systems Inc., Perry Central Community School Corp. and Southern Hills and VirtualConsultMD, and Vigo County School Corp. and Hamilton Center.
