Winnecke: Proposed Swimming Complex Will ‘Reinvigorate’ Garvin Park

Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke has announced the planned replacement location of the city’s more than 40-year-old indoor public pool complex. In a video released by the mayor’s office, Winnecke says a new aquatic center will be constructed across from Bosse Field as a successor to Lloyd Pool. He says environmental issues at the current Lloyd Pool site made it infeasible for redevelopment.

The planned new location, in the Jacobsville area, is the result of two years of efforts from a city-launched task force and will serve "the needs of the competitive swimmers of the areas, as well as the recreational swimming needs of the area," according Winnecke. Plans call for a splash pad outside the indoor facility.

Funding for the project, Winnecke says, will come from corporate contributions, a Tax Increment Financing District and proceeds from Tropicana Evansville Resort and casino. He adds that he thinks the center will "reinvigorate" Garvin Park. The City Council will be advised about the proposal September 10.
