A mayor-sponsored charter school has opened a new building in Indianapolis. Avondale Meadows Middle School, built on the city’s east side for $5 million, is an extension of the nearby Avondale Meadows Academy that has served elementary students since 2006. AMMS had 90 students during the previous school year in a temporary location and will have an enrollment of 180 this year. The 35,000 square-foot facility has room for 300 students.

United Schools of Indianapolis is the charter organization of the elementary and middle school. Executive Director Kelly Herron says "Avondale Meadows Middle School is building upon the solid foundation our scholars have received at Avondale Meadows Academy. We partner closely with families and hold scholars to high expectations to prepare them to excel in high school and beyond."

The school is authorized through Mayor Joe Hogsett’s Office of Education Innovation and is part of the Indianapolis Public Schools Innovation Network Schools initiative. AMMS serves students in grades six-eight.
