Company Planning Major Project in Greenwood

Subscribe NowAn unnamed company is considering building a 615,000-square-foot facility at the site of a proposed FedEx distribution center in Greenwood. Our partners at the Daily Journal report the company plans to invest $80 million into the project, which could bring 1,250 jobs to the area.
The company continues to work out details of the project. At a Greenwood City Council meeting this week, Alexis Sowder, project manager for developer Scannell Properties, said the name of the company would be revealed as soon as possible.
"In this case, this is a highly competitive and confidential project," Sowder said. "The company is just not comfortable exposing their name. There is still quite a bit of internal approvals that need to take place."
The city and the company have agreed that no final approvals will be made until the company’s name and details on the facility’s purpose are revealed, according to the publication. Sowder said the facility would be a regional office for the company.
Sowder says the jobs would be full-time and would have an average pay would be close to $18 per hour, including the benefits package available to all employees.
The company plans to seek tax abatements for the project, details for which will be presented at the next council meeting. Sowder says, even with the abatements, the city would still receive about $5 million in real property taxes and about $1.3 million in personal property taxes.
"We know that it is unusual that we can’t disclose who the occupier is just yet," Sowder said. "But we also know that we are not going to be able to finalize anything until we bring that operator to (the council)."
The site was originally slated to go to the $259 million FedEx facility, but the company ceased those plans in March, saying "projected operational needs" showed the facility was not necessary.
