The HRI, a part of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, acquired 1,048 acres from American Electric Power for its Wabash River Project Area.
The land was previously leased by DNR as part of Fairbanks Landing Fish & Wildlife Area south of Terre Haute. The land continues to be included in Fairbanks Landing but also now is protected by DNR ownership. Funding came from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, The Nature Conservancy and National Wild Turkey Federation.
The Initiative now protects 36,985 acres of bottomland in the Wabash River and Sugar Creek watersheds and the Muscatatuck River. You can learn more about the Initiative by clicking here.
