Muncie Moving Forward With Water Treatment Plant Upgrade

Subscribe NowGround has been broken on the second phase of a $23 million project to upgrade Muncie’s water treatment plant. The construction will replace the current White River intake and raw water pumping facilities, along with allowing the city to meet new, more stringent water quality standards.
Indiana American Water is using a design-build concept to complete the project to try to help control costs, while allowing for collaboration. “These investments in our treatment facility are a major step forward in delivering on our commitment to quality water service to our Muncie customers,” said Indiana American Water President Deborah Dewey. “A quality, reliable water supply helped fuel Muncie’s economy in the last century, and with the improvements we’re announcing today, we’re well-positioned to continue and enhance that tradition of quality for our next generation of customers.”
Some of the improvements include a switch from using a gaseous chlorine and ammonia to safer liquid chemicals, and UV disinfection. The company recently installed new wells, made improvements at Prairie Creek reservoir, and installed automatic main flushing devices to help with disinfection of byproducts, as well as installing $10 million in new water mains. The project is expected to be complete by the end of 2019.
