Construction to Begin on Red Line

Preparations are underway as crews get set to begin construction next week on the IndyGo Red Line project in Indianapolis. The effort comes just weeks after the project received $75 million in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Construction will officially begin Monday along Shelby Street in Indy. Crews are using the days leading up to the beginning of construction to post advance construction signage and make traffic pattern adjustments in the area.

IndyGo says no lane restrictions are expected, but drivers will see some lane shifts occurring along Shelby Street at Campus Drive North, Southern Avenue, and Pleasant Run Parkway South Drive. IndyGo will have a live construction map, weekly schedules and more information at the Red Line website.

Construction over the next few weeks will include:

• Beginning today: Shelby Street from Hanna Avenue to Prospect Street – drivers will notice advance construction signage and some traffic pattern adjustments
• June 4 through June 15: Shelby St. from Hanna Ave. to Troy Ave. – roadway and sidewalk improvements
• June 11 through June 22: Shelby St. from Troy Ave. to Raymond St. – roadway and sidewalk improvements
• June 18 through July 3: Shelby St. from Raymond St. to Prospect St. – roadway and sidewalk improvements

The $96 million Red Line project will eventually run from Westfield to Greenwood. The first phase of the project will be a 13.1-mile stretch between Broad Ripple Village and the University of Indianapolis, and will include 27 new stations and 13 new 60-foot articulated electric buses.
