Sophia and creator David Hanson will deliver a speech, take questions and speak on what happens next in the world of artificial intelligence.
Hanson is founder and CEO of Hanson Robotics, and programmed Sophia without prepared answers or statements, she instead, uses her brain through a Wi-Fi connection to use her extensive vocabulary. Hanson and Sophia appeared on "The Tonight Show" last year, and Hanson told host Jimmy Fallon "Sophia is a social robot," "and she has artificial software that we’ve developed at Hanson Robotics, which can process visual data. She can see people’s faces, she can process conversational data, emotional data, and use all of this to form relationships with people."
Sophia actually became a citizen of Saudi Arabia in October, which had never happened before for an artificial-intelligence powered android. Sophia, and Hanson, will speak to students in Kresge Auditorium at 7:30pm February 28th. The Ubben lecture series features several speakers this year, including "The Office" star Jenna Fischer, who will appear in April. Other speakers in the 2017-2018 series included Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai and ESPN Founder Bill Rasmussen, who spoke in September and November, respectively.
