Name Selected For Purdue’s Online University

Purdue University Global, the new moniker that has received approval from both the Purdue and Purdue NewU boards of trustees, is the institution resulting from Purdue’s acquisition last year of Kaplan University. The deal is set for its final approval hearing February 22 with the Higher Learning Commission, a regional accreditation organization.
Purdue NewU is the working name for the online school in the meantime.
The acquisition received unanimous approval from the Indiana Commission for Higher Education in August and its September approval from the U.S. Department of Education is contingent upon the new name including the word Purdue.
Purdue President Mitch Daniels says "our campuses are typically named after the physical locations where they hold classes. Purdue University Global can be accessed from anywhere in the world, at any time. The name proved appealing and meaningful to our various stakeholders – most importantly prospective students."
Purdue University Global will be lead by Kaplan University President Betty Vandenbosch, who said "the name is respectful of Purdue’s exceptional reputation, but also distinct from Purdue’s other campuses." Purdue calls the new entity "a third level" in its system, which includes campuses in West Lafayette, Fort Wayne, northwest Indiana and at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, as well as nine technology centers through Purdue Polytechnic Institute.
