Alumni Make Major Gift to Notre Dame

The University of Notre Dame is joining with two of its alumni to contribute a total of $50 million to support the university and the Congregation of Holy Cross, Notre Dame’s founding religious community. The gift from the university and Mary and Jay Flaherty will, among other things, support ongoing work on Corby Hall on the South Bend campus.

Notre Dame says the $50 million gift will be split in three ways:

• The Flahertys are donating $20 million and Notre Dame is adding $10 million for the reconstruction and ongoing maintenance of Corby Hall, which serves as an on-campus residence hall and center of hospitality for the Holy Cross community.
• The Flahertys are making an additional $5 million gift to the congregation "to benefit its aging religious," according to the university.
• Notre Dame will donate $15 million to the congregation. $10 million will go toward general needs and $5 million will establish an endowment in the university’s Office of Mission Engagement and Church Affairs.

Jay and Mary Flaherty are both 1979 graduates of Notre Dame. The university recently dedicated Flaherty Hall, named after Mary Flaherty, who donated $20 million for the construction of the residence hall. Jay Flaherty serves on the university’s board of trustees.

"The generosity, vision and love for Notre Dame shown by Mary and Jay over the years, not just through benefaction, but in myriad other ways, is extraordinary," said Rev. John Jenkins, president of Notre Dame. “We celebrated this wonderful gift with Jay’s fellow Trustees at our Board meeting in mid-October, and I’m pleased now to publicly thank and recognize them for their outstanding leadership. They have our never-ending gratitude.”

Notre Dame says the Flahertys have made a number of additional contributions to the university over the years, including support for student financial aid, an endowed professorship in psychology and the Hesburgh Library.
