Officials at Tropicana Evansville are gearing up for the grand opening of the state’s first land-based casino. Our partners at WEHT-TV report the doors have officially closed on the city’s riverboat casino as crews move the remaining slot machines and table games into the new facility.

The riverboat casino, originally known as Casino Aztar, opened in December 1995 and became known as Tropicana Evansville in 2013. The casino is the first to move onto land since the Indiana General Assembly passed legislation two years ago allowing for the inland move.

The $50 million land-based casino project was first announced in November 2015 and received state approval in February 2016. 

The grand opening ceremony for the new Tropicana Evansville is set for Friday morning at 10:00. Casino officials tell WEHT they expect to be at full capacity that day and are shuttling employees into work from an off-site parking lot to allow more space for visitors.
