Hammond is detailing a $1.5 million plan to develop a bike trail connecting the city’s downtown to the Grand Marquette Trail. The city says project will give bikers, runners and walkers expanded safe access to travel the city.

The city says the project is a partnership with the Hammond Sanitary District and Redevelopment Commission. The district has developed a plan to build the trail with a drainage system designed to reduce storm water run-off at a cost of $500,000. The redevelopment commission has passed a resolution committing $500,000 to the project through its Tax Increment Financing Fund. For the remaining funding, the city is seeking money from the Common Council from 2018 gaming revenues.

When completed, the trail will run from South Hammond through to Wolf Lake and take a loop around the Irving Park neighborhood.

The trail marks the latest bit of development news for the Lake County city. Hammond-based Staff Source last week announced it has moved its corporate headquarters to a newly-renovated building it says will provide higher visibility for people looking for work.
