Subscribe NowFlorida native Lexi Thompson won this weekend’s inaugural Indy Women in Tech Championship at the Brickyard Crossing Golf Course at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. More than 140 players took part in the LPGA event, which included several events throughout the week supporting STEM education and showcasing the Indianapolis tech scene.
The three-day stroke play tournament featured 144 players competing for a $2 million purse. Thompson took home $300,000 for winning the event with a three-round score of -19.
The week began with the IWiT Summit, bringing big names in STEM fields together to talk about education opportunities for students. The keynote speaker was Mae Jemison, the first African American woman in space. Other speakers at the event included Bridgestone Motorsports Chief Engineer Cara Adams and High Alpha Managing Partner Scott Dorsey.
Later in the week, The Eureka! Exchange gave around 1,000 fifth and sixth grade students the opportunity to take part in hands-on STEM activities. They included building model helicopters with Rolls-Royce in Indianapolis and coding instructions for a robot with Eleven Fifty Academy.
Former Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard, who now works with Indy Women in Tech Inc., was a driving force behind the multi-year deal to bring the event to the city.
