Columbus-based Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) is partnering with Vincennes University on a nationwide training initiative. Through the four-year Technician Apprentice Program, Cummins apprentices will spend the equivalent of two years at VU working toward an associate’s degree in Diesel and Heavy Equipment Technology and a Cummins engine certification.

The school and company say graduates can pursue careers in power generation, marine, high horsepower and service operations fields. VU Diesel Technology program Chair Tim Hale says "it will provide great opportunities for students to enter promising careers for one of the leading companies in the world," said Tim Hale, chair of VU’s Diesel Technology program."

The TAP partnership is registered through the U.S. Department of Labor and the first group of students has already begun classes. The next cohort will start in July and more will begin in October 2018.

Cummins Executive Director of Service Operations Doug Dawes says "this partnership will benefit students with the skills necessary to be more successful in an increasingly complex workplace and will benefit Cummins with a source of qualified and capable talent. A strong workforce benefits the industry and strengthens our communities."
