The week-long trade mission to Japan will start September 7 and feature meetings with companies including Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE: TM), Subaru Corp. and Honda Motor Co. (NYSE: HMC).
The trip will also involve meetings with officials in Indiana’s sister state, Tochigi Prefecture, and the cities of Tokyo and Nagoya. More than 280 Japan-owned businesses are located in Indiana, supporting over 58,000 jobs in the state.
"The cultural and economic ties between Indiana and Japan are storied and strong," Holcomb said. "The state’s relationship with Japan is crucial to our economy and to supporting Hoosier jobs across the state."
Through the first eight months of the year, businesses with parent companies in Japan including Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Indiana Inc., NTK Precision Axle Corp. and Kimura Foundry America have announced multi-million dollar investments in Indiana operations which involve plans for hundreds of jobs throughout the state.
The governor’s schedule includes meetings with government, chamber and corporate leaders. The delegation will talk with companies invested in Indiana like Subaru, Toyota and Honda and attend the annual Midwest U.S.-Japan Association Conference along with representatives from 10 states throughout the region.
The Indiana Economic Development Corp. says more Japan-owned businesses per capita are located in Indiana than any other state. The IEDC has an office in Tokyo and says the trade mission, which is scheduled for September 7-15, will be covered by private donations to the Indiana Economic Development Foundation.
The last state-organized trade delegation to visit Japan was in 2015 led by then-Governor Mike Pence.
