The project, which is expected to take up to a year to complete, will bring the service to more than 450 homes in Ellettsville.
Smithville says, when complete, residents will be able to significantly boost their Internet data speeds and the company will be able to offer its digital TV service over fiber. The company adds the project is expected to create up to 10 related jobs in Ellettsville.
The company is adding the fiber service in four Ellettsville neighborhoods: Prominence Pointe, Deer Run, Greenbrier Knolls and Arrowhead. When operational, the service will have the capability of offering gigabit data speeds.
"Ellettsville has been our corporate headquarters for many years and it’s also where we first began converting our legacy copper systems into state-of-the-art fiber," said Darby McCarty, chief executive officer of Smithville. “We’ve wanted to do this for years, and we’re pleased that we’re finally able to do so. When the new fiber is turned on in these four neighborhoods, current Smithville customers who were previously on our copper legacy systems will be given the option to dramatically increase their current 10-20 Mbps speeds."
Smithville began its fiber expansion in 2009 and currently owns more than 2,500 miles of fiber in Indiana.
