Nancy Frick with the St. Vincent Foundation says St. Vincent House will give patient families a place to eat, do laundry, and find "mutual support" with others.
"We’re so excited that the St. Vincent House is opening," Frick tells Inside INdiana Business. "This has been a long-time dream for our associates, and patients and families."
The building currently has two wings, with a total of 20 guest rooms. Each individual room is constructed to sleep five people, which allows the St. Vincent House to accommodate up to 100. However, Frick says there is a footprint to expand with two additional wings that would add another 20 rooms. She estimates that could cost another $2 million.
Frick expects the majority of people staying at the house to be families of NICU patients. She says St. Vincent’s NICU has more than 100 beds. Since the Marten House Hotel closed, many of those families have been staying in local hotels, thanks to a partnership with St. Vincent.
The house is meant for St. Vincent’s most needy families. Frick says those than can pay a minimal amount to stay are asked to do so, but are not required. The house includes prayer and meditation spaces, family gathering areas and laundry and kitchen facilities.
St. Vincent broke ground last month on the William Nasser Healthcare Education and Simulation Center. It will house classrooms and simulation spaces including an operating room, delivery room and intensive care unit. The facility is expected to be complete by July 2018.
