Purdue University says its electric karting series for high school and college students and M-STEM3 fair will return in May to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The school says the events aim to take advantage of Indiana’s racing heritage to spark students’ interest in STEM fields.

The Student Karting World Finals will take place May 15-17 and feature the International Collegiate evGrandPrix Series and the High School Go Karting Series. The collegiate series will feature more than 20 all-electric carts made by students from Purdue, the University of Oklahoma, Ivy Tech Community College, Kennesaw State University and the University of Northwestern Ohio. The high school event will feature 20 karts made by teams featuring about 200 high school students.

As part of the races, students must build functioning electric karts and handle sponsorship, community outreach, design and travel logistics. The vehicles compete in 30-lap races on a track constructed within the IMS facility.

The MSTEM3 500 student fair will connect more than 1,000 high school students with demonstrations of STEM careers and applications. The event will feature presentations from Honda Performance Development, Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing and Andretti Autosport. The fair runs May 15-16.
