State, local and Indiana State University officials will kick off rehabilitation efforts Monday at a long-vacant historic building in Terre Haute. Crews will break ground on the $23 million redevelopment of the former American Can building, which will be transformed into the RiverFront Lofts.

Indianapolis-based Core Redevelopment announced plans for the project in August. The building, also known as the ICON building, originally served as a manufacturing facility for the American Can Co. The rehabilitated version of the building will house 165 loft-style, market-rate apartments.

Work on RiverFront Lofts is expected to be complete in 2018. The project is part of the Regional Cities Initiative plan for the Wabash River Region. 

The building was opened by American Can in 1931 and was later purchased by Pillsbury to make food products. It was then purchased in 1995 by ICON Transportation to be used for storage and has stood vacant since the early 2000s.
