Wine Industry Continues Indiana Growth

Purdue University’s Wine Grape Team says Indiana’s wine industry continues to grow. The team says sales have increased by 15 percent year-over-year, with the industry contributing more than $72 million to the state’s economy.

The industry has grown to 92 wineries, producing more than 1 million gallons of wine. That puts Indiana among the top 20 wine-producing states in the United States. More wineries, including Urban Vine in Westfield, are set to open this year. Indiana’s largest vineyards are Oliver Winery and Vineyards in Bloomington, Huber’s Winery and Vineyards in Clark County, Daniel’s Vineyard and McCordsville and Dulcius Vineyards in Columbia City.

The Purdue Wine Grape Team is made up of food science, horticulture and landscape architecture and extension specialists. The team assists commercial and amateur grape growers and winemakers in Indiana and beyond with issues including keeping up with continuing growth. The group is hosting the 26th annual INDY International Wine Competition May 24-25 and Vintage Indiana, a wine and food festival, on June 3 in downtown Indianapolis.
