This summer, Southwest Airlines will add a new seasonal nonstop flight between Indy and San Diego.
The new flight will begin June 4. The addition brings the number of nonstop flights at the airport to 44, up from 22 in 2015. The airport says Southwest offered 70 percent more seats flying from Indy in 2016 than in 2014.
"Southwest has taken the lead in flight capacity in Indianapolis," said Mario Rodriguez, executive director of the Indianapolis Airport Authority. "They’ve been investing heavily in the Indy market, and have had their ears open to the customer. When they saw this opportunity to add San Diego, they made it happen. San Diego is heavy with business opportunity, particularly in the tech sector, and it’s a favorite conference destination and a strong leisure hold in southern California."
The new flight is the second nonstop from Indy to southern California. The airport also has a nonstop flight to the Los Angeles International Airport.
Additionally, Southwest says it will also add a new nonstop flight between Indianapolis and New York via Newark International Airport. That flight will also begin June 4.
