The funding, from Indianapolis-based Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation, will support a capital improvement project aimed at increasing energy efficiency at the park’s Welcome Center.
Conner Prairie says it will replace several aging HVAC air-handling units with high-efficiency units, beginning early next year. The project, which is expected to be complete by mid-2017, will reduce the system’s annual operating cost by 65 percent, according to Peine Engineering Co., which has been contracted for the work.
"Our Welcome Center will be more energy efficient and these upgrades will enable us to better control our indoor climate for our members, visitors and employees," said Norman Burns, chief executive officer of Conner Prairie. "This grant will help ensure that Conner Prairie will be part of the central Indiana community for generations to come. This will be a prudent investment that will help ensure our long-term sustainability."
Burns says money that is currently being used each year for basic infrastructure replacements will be directed toward more "strategic, long-term growth opportunities," including fundraising and youth summer camps. Conner Prairie says, once the improvements are complete, the museum will be better equipped to care for Smithsonian-loaned artifacts and exhibits.
Conner Prairie covers 800 acres and is the state’s first Smithsonian Institute affiliate.
