Mayor Lloyd Winnecke says construction has begun on an $18 million Hyatt Place Hotel, which is expected to be complete in early 2018.
Winnecke says the 139-room hotel project is being privately funded and is receiving no construction subsidy from the city. While no specific numbers were released, Winnecke says the hotel will create jobs and will impact the downtown area "for decades to come."
"We think (the location) creates a natural connection to the central business district," said Winnecke. "All this, we think, will help stimulate additional growth and development in and around our downtown area."
Winnecke says the hotel will generate new property taxes as the property had previously been owned by a nonprofit organization. He adds the city will accelerate the replacement of an 80-year-old water line in the area in conjunction with the hotel’s construction.
Winnecke says the hotel “checks a lot of boxes for us.”
