Indy Archbishop to be a Cardinal

Indianapolis Archbishop Joseph Tobin has been appointed Cardinal by Pope Francis. Tobin will be installed into the College of Cardinals during a ceremony next month. He will continue as head of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed Tobin Archbishop of Indianapolis four years ago. In all, 17 new Cardinals have been named. Vatican Radio says 13 will be under the age of 80, thus eligible to vote in a conclave upon accepting the position November 19. Tobin is one of three Archbishops from the U.S. to receive the nod.

In a statement, Tobin said:

I have come to love deeply the people of the Catholic communities of central and southern Indiana and count as a precious blessing the numerous friendships I have with civic and religious leaders throughout the state. I ask all people of faith to pray for me. I hope this new responsibility will make me a better servant of all Hoosiers. I also offer my prayers and support to the other Cardinals-elect, especially Archbishop Blase Cupich of Chicago and Archbishop Kevin Farrell, of Dallas, who was recently appointed to a new position in Rome.

Prior to coming to Indianapolis, Tobin was Archbishop Secretary of the Vatican Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life. The 64-year-old was ordained a priest in 1978 and became an Archbishop in 2010.
